Flats of Astiana Tomatoes
Originally found in Piedmont, Italy, this supremely delicious sauce and paste tomato was introduced to the Pacific Northwest by Carol and Anthony Boutard of Ayers Creek (now closed, but never forgotten!)
To learn more about how the Boutards first encountered Astianas and the years they spent selectively breeding them for the Northwest climate, check out this blog post from Kathleen Bauer.
A perfect combination of sweet and tart flavor, meaty flesh, and easy to remove skin and seeds, Astiana is the ultimate tomato for putting up! Passata (a smooth, strained tomato puree), your favorite sauce or umami-packed paste are all ideal applications for Astianas.
We source our Astiana tomatoes from a select group of small, sustainable farms in and around the Portland Area, and we’re so excited to get plenty of them into your kitchen!
